RADIO UNILAG 103.1FM

The journey of campus broadcasting in Nigeria dates back to 1982, when Prof Ralph Akinfeleye called for the establishment of an educational radio station for the university of Lagos. The then head of dept of Mass communication unilag, Prof Alfred Opubor took up the college and wrote to the federal ministry of information and communication for radio license.

The university did not get radio license until d eventual media deregulation policy of 1992.

The license was grated in feb 2002, twenty years after the university applied for it. The frequency of 103.1fm was assigned to the university in july 2003 and the station was officially commissioned on the 14th of Dec 2004 by former Vice President Alh Atiku Abubakar.

Unilag Fm is on the mainland of Lagos city, 7th floor, senate building yaba, lagos mainland, Lagos Nigeria. Inside the university of lagos campus.

The station is conceived as an inter-alia as a laboratory for the training of students in broadcast journalism in a ever expanding competitive job market. Its designed with a local, rather than regional or national character; for strong economic reasons, concentrate on large degree and interest of listeners in the immediate neighbourhood because of its limited resources, as a result of transformation in new technology, market forces and public taste; the station is expected to be considerably broad when fully operation.

Unilag Fm is a specialised station and community oriented, it plans to employ niche programming for its niche audience.

To achieve its objectives, sustainability is fundamental so unilag fm is projected at two different market

The station is managed by a co-ordinator that reports to the vice chancellor, through a ten member management board. The management board submits to the vice chancellor a quarterly reports report and through same process an annual reports to the university's governing council.

Its the terms and references of the board that covers the development of strategies for making the station an effective, educational service delivery medium and an effective training group for the students in mass comm, English, Electrical and Electronic engineering and allied disciplines.

Its responsibilities also include the generation of revenue on sustainable basis.

The board controls in developing guidelines in the quality and content of the station programmes.

The University’s radio station, UNILAG 103.1 FM, the first by any University in Nigeria was established in 2004, to provide new experiences for students especially in relevant disciplines such as Mass Communication, Physics, Electronics, Distance Learning.
